Woodcutters,
Must be sawing,
For temple builders,
As their shouts are echoeing,
In the mountain, all day long, ampliflying.

< ひぐらし >
きこりたちが、(一日中)宮木を引いているに違いない。山にその呼び声が山彦になった響いている。
* ひぐらし higurashi – 中型のセミで、朝夕に甲高い声で鳴く; 朝から晩まで, 一日中; clear-toned cicada crying in the morning and evening with high tone.; from morning to evening, all day long.
* ひくらし hikurashi – 朝から晩まで, 一日中; from morning till night, all day long.
* ひく hiku – のこぎりで切る; saw
* らし rashi – (助動詞) らしい, だろう, …にちがいない (aux.) will, must
* 杣人 somabito – きこり woodcutter
* あしひき ashihiki – 山の枕詞; pillow word for ‘yama’ (mountain)
* 呼びとよむ yobitoyomu – 呼び声が響く a call echoes.

Woodcutters must be sawing for temple builders, as their shouts are echoeing and amplifying, in the mountain, all day long.
