ちはやぶる 神の斎垣(イガキ)に はふ葛(クズ)も 秋にはあへず うつろひにけり

The branches of kudzu vine,
Growing at Igaki fence, unchanging usually,
At boisterous Kami residing shrine,
Are turning red fleetingly,
With the arrival of autumn unbearably.

< 神社の近くに来た時に、玉垣の内の紅葉を見て詠んだ歌 >
荒々しい神の玉垣に這う葛も、(本来は勇ましく紅葉しないはずだが)、秋には耐えかねず、紅葉している。
* ちはやぶる-神の枕詞; 荒々しい神に由来
* 斎垣-神社など、神聖な場所に巡らした垣
(Appreciation)
The branches of kudzu vine at Igaki fence, are usually unchanging, growing at boisterous Kami residing shrine. However, with the arrival of autumn unbearably, they are turning red fleetingly.
* ‘chihayaburu’ – a pillow word for ‘Kami’; originated from boisterous Kami.
* ’Igaki’ – fence around a shrine
