五月山(ｻﾂｷﾔﾏ) こずゑを高み ほととぎす なく音(ﾈ)空なる 恋もするかな
紀 貫之
In the mountain in May,
I hear a little cuckoo singing,
High in the treetops, certainly.
Of me to say something,
In empty love I’m falling.

(鑑賞)
五月の山に、高い梢(ｺｽﾞｴ)で鳴くホトトギスの声が聞こえてくるが、わたしはといえば空虚な恋をしているのだ。
補足：「空」は、「ほととぎすの音空なる」と「空なる恋」とふたつに掛かる。空なる恋を ’empty love’ と訳した。「空なる恋」は、切ない恋、という程の意味になるだろう。’empty love’ は中身のない恋、という程の意味になるだろう。同じ「空」でも違ってくるが、ここでは面白いのであえて ’empty’ を使うことにした。

In a mountain in May, I hear a little cuckoo singing high in the treetops certainly. As for myself, I am falling in empty love.
Note: ‘空'(sky; empty) is related to both ‘cuckoo singing’ and ‘love’. Strictly speaking, the former will mean ‘cuockoo heard in the air’, and the latter ‘missing her’. I rather use ’empty love’ as it is interesting interpretation.
