Enjoying Kyoka in English: Nanpo Ota-108
この子日(ﾈﾉﾋ)* いづれに心 ひかれまし 松は十八(ｼﾞｭｳﾊﾁ)** ことは十三(ｼﾞｭｳｻﾝ)***

The day of the rat*, which shall I be attracted to,
Pulling out eighteen small pines**, or picking thirteen young herbs, while playing Koto***?
Yomono Akara (Nanpo Ohta)
* 十二支の子(ﾈ)の日。野に出で小松を抜き、若菜を摘み、琴を弾き千代を祝う
Day of the rat of the twelve horary signs. It was a common practice to pull out Komatsu (small pines), pick young herbs in the field, while playing Koto (Japanese harp), wishing for thousands of ages.
** 松; 松の字は、十、八、公からなる
松 (Matsu; pine tree) in Japanese characters consists of ten, eight, and open, literally.
*** こと; 琴(ｺﾄ) 琴は十三絃からなる
Koto (Japanese harp) consists of 13 strings

子の日の小松引き、若菜摘み、琴を関連づけた数の技巧の狂歌。
Skillful Kyoka focused on the numbers, in connection with pulling small pines (=18 from the Kanji character) and picking young herbs while listening to Koto (=13 from the number of strings) at the day of the rat.
(注) 狂歌(きょうか)とは、風刺、皮肉、しゃれ、 滑稽を盛り込んだ5-7-5-7-7形式の短歌。江戸時代後期(18世紀後半)に隆盛し、天明狂歌として黄金期を迎える。大田南畝(蜀山人 ｼｮｸｻﾝｼﾞﾝ; 1749-1823)は、その代表的文人、狂歌師。
Note: Kyoka is satirical, ironical or comical short Japanese poem, derived from Tanka, composed of 31 syllables, with a pattern of 5-7-5-7-7 sounds. It flourished and marked a golden age in the late Edo period in the late 18th century as Tenmei Kyoka. Ota Nampo, Shokusanjin (1749-1823), is one of the leading Kyoka poets.
