御垣守(みかきもり) 衛士(ゑじ)のたく火の 夜は燃え 昼は消えつつ 物をこそ思へ

御垣守(=宮中の門を警護する兵士)である衛士(=兵士)のたく火が、夜は燃えて、昼は消えているように、わたしも夜は恋の炎に身をこがし、昼は消え入り沈みこみ、もの思いに耽(ふけ)るのである。
The fires lit by the court guards standing
In the night is to be burning
And in the daytime vanishing,
What my love for her is in the night to be burning
And in the daytime appearing vanishing.
